Graphic Design for Albert Schweitzer Hospital

The brief for the graphic design of this department was: “the painting of the Dutch Golden Age, presented in the setting for which it was originally intended.

The brief for the graphic design of the Neurology Outpatient Department was: “the painting of the Dutch Golden Age, presented in the setting for which it was originally intended.”

Well-known from that period are the fantastic wood panelings with integrated paintings, also called behangsels; in this case, those by Van Strij were used. Particularly striking is a ceiling panel by Abraham Busschop, a trompe-l’oeil depicting the tale of the raven that is stripped of the feathers with which it had adorned itself.

As with nearly all departments in the Albert Schweitzer Hospital, an explanation is provided through a biographical approach—here focusing on the art of Dordrecht during the Dutch Golden Age. Thanks to close collaboration between the Albert Schweitzer Hospital, the Dordrechts Museum, EbbenTraffic, Van Wijnen, and Boer & Van Wijk, the brief has been fully realized.

Execution and Implementation

The wall coverings were printed on 3M IJ40 polymer vinyl using the Mimaki JV 33-130, and then matte laminated.
A humorous anecdote occurred during the installation of these prints. While one of our installers was smoothing out imperfections with a spatula, a carpenter from Van Wijnen approached, warning that we would damage the paneling profiles this way. After our installer let him feel that there were actually no profiles, he was somewhat surprised—but then understood the optical illusion.

The ceiling panels—six in total, each measuring 1200 × 1200 mm—were solvent-printed on clear polymer vinyl, matte laminated, and mounted on 5 mm thick opal acrylic.

During the preparatory phase, we worked closely with Van Wijnen and EbbenTraffic to pay careful attention to the lighting of the installation; both the distance and the color temperature proved crucial to the overall visual effect.

Special consideration in selecting the acrylic was given to preventing sagging at this size.

Printed biography

The biography was printed using our Mimaki JV 33-130 on white polymer vinyl, laminated with matte polymer vinyl, and finally mounted on 4 mm Dibond.

Installing this panel, measuring 1000 × 2600 mm, directly onto the wall using mounting adhesive resulted in a clean, seamless finish.

Inspiration leads to creation, and that brings so much satisfaction.
