With treasures from palace archives and masterpieces from the lost collection of King Willem II, the Dordrechts Museum brought the splendor of the “collector king” to life.
The exhibition featured an incredible range of items, from paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, and Leonardo da Vinci to various objects, including a mounted horse. We were proud to contribute our “craftsmanship” to the exhibition, providing wallpaper in four different color schemes, a large blow-up, cut letters, and numerous panels with explanatory texts.
Of course, we did not handle the design itself, which was in the hands of three professional designers, but we ensured that their vision was executed down to the last detail. Part of this exhibition later moved to the Vila Vauban Museum in Luxembourg, where we also installed the blow-up.
The wallpaper, totaling 295 m², was solvent inkjet printed on PlakZ and installed in panels across the exhibition in four different color schemes. The blow-up, measuring 840 cm wide by 450 cm high, was also printed on PlakZ. The location of this blow-up was essentially the centerpiece of the exhibition, serving as the backdrop for multiple press events, including the official opening by King Willem-Alexander.
For the cut lettering, Avery 500 series films were used. Wherever required, these texts were applied to the walls. After the computer-controlled cutting of each text, the excess parts of the letters are “weeded” out. A special application tape is then applied over the readable side of the text.
During installation on the wall, the original backing of the Avery film is carefully removed while positioning the full text. Once pressed into place, the application tape is peeled away, leaving the text clearly legible on the wall.
The dozens of panels were solvent-printed on self-adhesive polyester film, mounted on Forex boards, carefully trimmed, and then installed on the museum walls alongside paintings and other displays.
This type of production is frequently used by Boer & Van Wijk for various museums.
Of course, you want to know what we produce on a daily basis: how we do it, and with which machines and materials. In these blogs, we showcase this daily, highly varied work, as well as the choices we make and the advice we provide along the way.
